Bookworm

Henry loves to read. Finally, a sign that he is my child.

"Oh yes, this is very interesting.    Have you ever read this before?    Maybe you can when I'm done."

Also, for the past three nights, Henry has fallen asleep to recordings of General Conference talks. When all else fails, there's nothing like Russell M. Nelson's voice to put that boy to sleep.  I find that wonderful.

Family Fun

My family visited us this week. At least, those who still live at home--my mom, dad and youngest brother Nate. And when I say they visited us, what I really mean is they visited Henry and the fact that we were here was just an added bonus.

We took lots of walks along the Riverwalk. It's been in the upper 70's here--woohoo for early spring.

Some of us took more naps than others.

We wrote lots of letters to Elder Geoff.

Had general cuteness and silliness

Henry got to play with his first basketball. He quite enjoyed the experience, though we need to teach him that licking the ball is not part of the game.

And, as always, family get-togethers are a funny experience. Here are some of my favorite quotes from this week.

"Dad, if you got pulled over it would be cops and Roberts." --Nate

"Everyone annoys me. You just annoy me less than everyone else, so I married you." --Mom to Dad

(While playing a card game) Nate: "No one goes counter clockwise." Dad: "In the southern hemisphere, toilet water spins counter clockwise. I want to go to Australia and flush a toilet."

Warm, Warmer, Warmest

I'm sure you've been wondering how the Fishers enjoy the warm weather. Here are just a few of the ways.

Family walks along the Riverwalk. Possible during the week because the sun doesn't go down until after 7, which is probably the only good thing about the time change.

Drives around Belle Isle

Eating dinner on restaurant patios. Traffic Jam and Snug is our most recent find. Guy Fieri may have made the discovery, but we'll take the credit. Best BLT ever, cool hipster atmosphere.

Don't let the scowl fool you, Henry quite enjoys being outside. His favorite things to look at are bushes and dogs.

A rant and a rave

Please bear with me while I go off on a bit of a rant. I do not understand why women think it's okay to insult their husbands in front of other women. I have come to realize lately that when women get together, a common topic of conversation is the faults of their husbands (and children, but that's another rant for another day). Even if their husbands are incompetent (which I think may be the case for some of them), I don't think a wife should complain about her husband to other people.

To make up for this gross error in judgement, I wanted to list a few of my own husband's many good qualities.

  • Ben loves children. He is often more interested in talking to/playing with them than he is with adults
  • He loves our son. One of his favorite parts of the week is his Saturday morning alone time with Henry
  •  He is an excellent cook (and baker). He can effortlessly whip up a delicious meal that he made up on the spot
  • He is tall, so he can reach high shelves, and he is strong, so he can open tight lids
  • He is athletic. There really isn't a sport that he isn't at the very least competent at. In other words, he is not a pansy.
  • He loves museums. Like, really loves them
  • If he thinks something is really funny, he will have one, loud outburst of a laugh that often turns heads
  • He loves my family almost as much as he loves his own. And he is an excellent example to my little brothers
  • He makes me laugh. A lot
  • He thinks I'm beautiful even when I don't shower
  • When he lies, his nostrils flare. Then when I ask him if he is lying he says, yes. And his lies usually involve whether or not he ate something off my plate while I was in the bathroom.
  • He goes out of his way to help and befriend others. He even spent 10 minutes at a church activity talking to what he thought was a new investigator but was really an intoxicated homeless man who had wandered in off the street
  • He likes going grocery shopping with me
  • He is a worthy priesthood holder who can give me blessings when I need them

The life of a 3 month old

Now that Henry is 3 months old, he has a few words of wisdom to share.

Live from Detroit, it's Saturday night

I've been wanting to do a gif for awhile now, and when I finally tried it, I realized I love it. And that I couldn't decide between these two gems.

Stretching before the big game. I'm pretty sure he beat the opponents soundly in the skirmish.

Despite what people who only see us after 6 pm might think (which is most people), this is what Henry does most of the day.

We played quite a few games tonight, and the most entertaining was probably Mad Gab. I got to meet Robot Ben, and he is delightful. And yes, the sound is ever so slightly off and goes out at the end. I just didn't feel like fixing it. And no, we had not done this before. I am just that good.

Artsy Pants

For Family Home Evening this week, we took it upon ourselves to create a masterpiece for the blank wall in our living room. Ben has been wanting some kind of abstract art, and I have been wanting to melt crayons, as so many have been doing (according to pinterest). Being the great couple that we are, we found a compromise.

For those of you who would like to repeat this project (which is quite fun, even if you don't have a specific place you plan on hanging it), here is how we did it.

You will need: 1 canvas, 1 blow dryer, a hot glue gun, and as many crayons as necessary. We used up most of a box of 24 and a box of 64.

We decided to take the wrappers off of the crayons (some prefer to keep them on). The easiest way to do this is soak them in water.

Once they are all unwrapped, arrange them in the order you want the colors to be, and glue them to the canvas, with the bottoms along the top edge

The next part is the most fun. Prop the canvas up at an angle with the crayons at the top. Make sure to have newspapers laid on the floor so it's not too messy. Then, start blow drying.

It takes quite awhile--we were blow drying for about an hour. You can manipulate the direction and length of the flow of wax to get your desired look.
We then flipped ours upside down and hung it on the wall, and this was the result:
